Patio slab leveling
Patios are often poured over backfill next to the house. When the fill settles, the slab can tilt toward the foundation and direct water where it shouldn’t go. Lifting may restore slope away from the house if the slab is sound.
Why it settles
- Settling backfill next to the foundation
- Roof water discharging onto the patio edge
- Lack of a compacted base
Often suitable
- Intact slabs sloping toward the house
- Single panels dropped at a joint
Usually not suitable
- Pavers or flagstone (different methods apply)
- Thin, crumbling or spalled slabs
- Patios over structures such as cold rooms — needs engineering review
Risks, drainage and other considerations
- Confirm there is no cold room or structure beneath
- Plan to redirect downspouts
- Existing cracks usually remain visible
Lift or replace?
Lifting keeps the existing concrete, so it makes sense only when that concrete is worth keeping. If it is broken up, deteriorated or heaved, replacement is usually the better route. See lifting vs replacement and what affects cost.
